Notes

Researchers into the Mary Loutisha Thomas family say that her Fugate husband died in the Civil War. There was a Zachariah Fugate AND his father who died before the 1870 census was taken. Mary seems to have had a penchant for naming the firstbor n son after his father (i.e. Edward Cole and possibly THOMAS Strong). Based on this, and the fact that Zachariah lived in Breathitt County in 1860, I am assuming this is the father's name of her son, Zachariah. I have yet to find a Civil War Pensi on Record for Zachariah, but if my findings are correct, he and his father served in the Confederate Army and pensions were not given out until about 1911. By then Mary was already married to Edward Cole and would not have been elligible for a Wi dow's Pension.

Elijah enrolled as a Private December 3, 1862 in Irvine, KY, was mustered-in to Co. G of the 14th KY Cavalry February 13, 1863, and was honorably discharged March 24, 1864 at Camp Nelson, KY.
His description at the age of 20 was: 5 feet 10 inches tall, fair complexion, light hair, and blue eyes.
He married Lucy Ann Carmack in 1868 and in 1870 the couple was living in Abraham Carmack's household in the Traveler's Rest Precinct. By 1880, they had their own dwelling next-door to Abraham. Sometime between 1899 and 1905, they had moved to lan d on the left fork of Doe Creek road. In the Berea Citizen, June 22, 1905, for Major, KY, was this item: "Elijah Thomas has moved from Doe Creek to property opposite Sheriff Wilson so as to be nearer his place of business." Elijah was still living when his son Lewis was killed in 1926.
Elijah had measles while in the service. By 1926, he was receiving a $72. a month pension.
He was living with daughter, Ida, on 1920 Lee Co. Census. He lived in daughter Isabel's home on Doe Cr. Rd. from 1924 until his death in 1933. There was a request for burial expenses by John Tirey in Elijah's pension file.
