Notes

James is the first of Marchant's sons to show up on the on the Clay County KY Tax List, in 1816, so he is evidently the oldest son of Marchant in the household on the 1810 Clay Co. KY Census. Since James Thomas is one of the possible father s of Marchant, he may have been named after his grandfather. He is living next-door to Marchant on the 1830 Clay Co. Census, P. 170. He was on the Clay County Tax List until 1842. For the time being, I am accepting the James Thomas on the 1840 Har lan Co. KY Census as the son of Marchant since there are other Thomas connections in that County. Also until Leslie was formed in 1878, Clay and Harlan bordered. A William Thomas (possibly James' brother) is on the same page of the census with Jam es. I will know more after looking at Harlan Co. land records. In 1872, Baird, s/o Elisha, James' brother, married Deborah Jane Brock there. Margaret Thomas Cornett, d/o Joseph, another brother of James, lived there by 1880.
According to James Bowman and Jeff Springer, James was a gunsmith with a registered mark.
In 1815, James was paid as one of the guards for some men accused of murder in Clay County, and was later appointed a Patroller for that county (in 1820). -Ref. Clay County Court Order Books
