Notes

Although the Arch & James Bowman work noted that after Samuel's death (c.1826) Rebecca had three illegitimate children by Andy "Pandy" Baker, from the Baker side of the family, it is said that the father of one of the children, James, was Andre w Jackson Baker and his mother was a Levina Woods whom they believe to be an illegitimate child of Rebecca's, born before she married Samuel Wood. It seems hard to believe (though not impossible) that Rebecca, who, according to census records, wa s age 16 when she married Samuel, had time to have a relationship with another man, get pregnant, and have a baby before she had a relationship with Samuel and married him. If Levina was a child of Rebecca's surely they would have brought her int o the family before 1830, but there is never an additional daughter in their household while Samuel is living. The extra 15-20 year old female does not appear in Rebecca's household until after her father, Philip Wilson dies. She could correspon d with one of the 2 females under 10 in Philip's household in 1820, but there is another explanation for the extra female in Rebecca's household in 1830. By then her oldest son would fit the male in the 20-30 age bracket and the female coul d be his wife or girlfriend. Therefore the 'illegitimate' children could belong to them and Grandma Rebecca was left to raise them (they show up in her household in 1840). Exactly who the parents of the children are cannot be determined at this ti me. But the legends are that they are illegitimate children of either Rebecca or her illegitimate daughter, LeVina and an Andrew Baker.
